Operations Research Society of China (ORSC)

          Founding

The Operations Research Society of China (ORSC) was founded in 1980 as a branch of the Chinese Mathematical Society. Its first national meeting was convened in

Jinan, Shandong, and Prof. Hua Luogeng was elected the founding president.

With the strong support of Prof. Qian Xuesen, then president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the ORSC was approved to separate from the Chinese Mathematical Society and affiliate with the Institute of Applied Mathematics within Chinese Academy of Sciences under the leadership of the CAST.

          Activities

Since its inception the ORSC has attached great importance to international academic exchange. In 1982, the ORSC became a member of the IFORS, and in 1985 was a founding member of the Association of Asian Pacific Operational Research Societies (APORS).

          Conferences

Notably, the ORSC joined with INFORMS to host INFORMS’ 2006 overseas academic conference in Hong Kong and 2012 conference in Beijing.

          Publication

The ORSC issues two Chinese language journals—Operations Research Transactions and Operations Research and Management—and joined hands in 2013 with international publisher Springer-Verlag to publish an English journal—Journal of the Operations Research Society of China.

          Awards

The ORSC has set up three awards, namely the Application Award, launched in 2000, the Youth

Science and Technology Award, launched in 2004, and the Science and Technology Award of Society, launched in 2008 (jointly set up and sponsored by the Science Press and registered at the Office for National Science and Technology Awards of China).

The three awards are made biannually to recognize operations research professionals have made extraordinary practical achievements and academic breakthroughs that have brought substantial economic profits and/or social benefits.
